Skilled Vehicle Technician
Location - Docklands, London

Background
The servicing, maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment in order to maximise their operational availability, safety and effectiveness.
Maintaining standards of workmanship and vehicle and equipment availability rates that are equivalent or better than best practice for Council transport fleets.
Key Responsibilities
- To carry out repair and maintenance to various types of fleet vehicles.
- Working in the council workshop.
- Maintaining various size fleet vehicles, including cars vans and buses.
- MOT tester qualification (desirable).
- Undertake the inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles, plant and equipment including other repairs and modifications on vehicles and equipment that require specialist skills and experience.
- Prepare and present all types of vehicles and motorcycles to appropriate approved testing stations and achieve a high pass rate,
- Undertake MOT tests on appropriate vehicles presented to the Council’s MOT bay.
- To undertake scheduled inspections and services to vehicles and equipment to a high standard and within agreed timescales.
- To undertake safety and maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment operated by contractors to the Council.
- To complete accurately all other appropriate and required records, including timesheets, driving hours etc.
- To identify, locate, order and collect parts as necessary to ensure works are undertaken within agreed timescales in order to maintain the operational efficiency of vehicles and equipment, including liaison with suppliers, manufacturers and/or their agents.
- To understand the Health and Safety risks identified for the Vehicle Workshop environment and ensure that all mitigating procedures and practices developed from the
- Risk Assessments are implemented. To notify the Workshop Supervisor immediately of any identified hazards or safety concerns.
- To keep nominated own work-area free from hazards and in a clean and tidy condition and assist others in keeping the whole of the Vehicle Workshop environment in a similar
condition. - To use and operate all equipment in the workshop in an appropriate manner and, once used, return it to the appropriate storage area.
- If a nominated key holder, to unlock and secure the workshop area if the Workshop Supervisor is not available to do so.
- To identify and then manage own workload effectively in line with agreed service priorities and prescribed standards, when the Workshop Supervisor is not available or if working away.
- To undertake restricted administrative duties in the absence of the Senior Vehicle
- Technician to ensure the effectiveness of the vehicle workshop and the delivery of its service standards.
- To keep any protective clothing or footwear issued to you in a clean and smart condition and ensure that they are cleaned in accordance with the manufacturer’s washing/cleaning
instructions. - To attend when required, receive appropriate training and certification(s) as identified by the Workshop Supervisor.
- To provide familiarisation training, where appropriate to do so, to others prior to their driving or operating equipment.
- To drive vehicles as required, either to collect, deliver, road test, or to attend testing stations, specialist repairers or other repairers.
- To undertake inspections of cars, light vans, purchased by staff of the Council and provide a current market valuation using appropriate professional guides held by the Workshop
Supervisor. - To use appropriate Information Technology as instructed and in accordance with training provided.
Qualifications and Experience
- Must have Level 3 City & Guilds or equivalent qualifications in Vehicle Technician.
- Could lead to permanent opportunity.Experience needed in HGV & PSV vehicles.
- Hold an appropriate vehicle technician qualification (equivalent NVQ Level 2 or above).
- Hold a full, clean car Driving Licence and Motorcycle Driving Licence (150cc
minimum). - Hold an appropriatePCV DD restricted (minimum) and/or HVG Class 2 (minimum)
driving licence. - Demonstrate at least two years’ experience of undertaking routine, multi skilled, working on cars, light vans and heavy vehicles that are similar to those operated by the Council.
- Ability to demonstrate experience and knowledge of undertaking repairs to:
- Hydraulic and/or Pneumatic systems
- Body panels
- Electrical systems
- Pedestrianised Vehicles and Motorcycles
- Experience of preparing and presenting vehicles to VOSA testing stations.
- Demonstrate experience and knowledge of using Welding equipment.
- A level of experience and knowledge of:
- Paint Spraying
- Fabrication
- Knowledge of basic hazards, and appropriate working practices, within a Vehicle Workshop environment
