Job Purpose

A Locum opportunity has arisen for a Safeguarding Lawyer to work with colleagues to achieve service plan objectives/targets.

Working Arrangements: 2 days in the office/3 days remote working.

Key Responsibilities

  • To participate in one-to-one performance and development reviews/appraisals and contribute to the identification of your own and team development needs.
  • To actively promote the council's Equal Opportunity Policy and Diversity Strategy and observe the standard of conduct which prevents discrimination taking place.
  • To ensure full compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 etc., the council's Health and Safety Policy and all locally agreed safe methods of work.
  • To fully understand and be aware of the council's commitment to the Section 17 duty of the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 to prevent crime and disorder.
  • At the discretion of the Head of Service, such other activities from time to time as may be agreed consistent with the nature of the job described above
  • The ensure that the preparation and conduct is appropriate within the relevant legal team in terms of social care matters
  • Where appropriate the preparation and conduct of such other cases as may be referred to the postholder by the Principal Lawyer and Team leader before the High Court, County Court Magistrates Court, Inquiries and Tribunals, including advocacy and instructing counsel in approved cases.
  • Advising and generally dealing with such other legal matters as may be referred to the post holder from time to time, including contentious and non-contentious matters.
  • Assisting with the instruction and supervision of other legal staff on such matters as may from time to time be determined.
  • Ensuring that the Principal Lawyer and Team Leader are at all times adequately informed on matters being dealt with by the post holder and to assist as required with arrangements for monitoring and progress of all work.
  • At all times to act in the name of the Director of Law and Governance and to observe the recognised standards of professional conduct for a solicitor, barrister, legal executive or other admitted lawyer to a recognised professional body.
  • To accept responsibility within the post holder’s control to ensure that all staff are complying with Thurrock Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy and, where applicable, equal opportunity objectives are achieved.
  • At the discretion of the Director, Assistant Director and Principal Lawyer such other activities as may from time to time be agreed consistent with the nature of the job described above.
